Musikelectronic Geithain
German loudspeaker manufacturer, best known in the west for their range of studio monitors but they have a large range of PA loudspeakers and mid & high end home hi-fi and AV loudspeakers as well. Company is usually branded ME Geithain and is run by Joachim Kiesler, one of the original founders of the company.
Company originally founded in 1960 in Geithain, Freistaat Sachsen, East Germany as a electronics and watch repair workshop and then named PGH Fernsehen-Rundfunk-Uhren, started manufacturing studio electronics such as microphone pre-amplifiers and mixers in 1966 and making electronic organs in 1970. In 1972 the company was converted to a VEB and from then on known as VEB Musikelectronic and became one of the largest loudspeaker manufacturer in the world making anything from cheap car audio speakers to reference studio monitors, and the biggest manufacturer of home hi-fi speaker in the DDR. Their hi-fi products were distributed in certain western countries under a variety of names, in particular one or two of their products became known in Canada as something of an audiophile bargain and have something of a cult status today in Europe and North America, but it was for their broadcast monitors that the company really began to get noticed. Unlike most western makers the company had to make all monitor components in-house (and in fact still does) and this lead to some great sounding bit sometimes slightly unusual coaxial connector designs in the latter half of the 80's.
In 1989 the Bavarian State Radio (Bayerischer Rundfunk) decided to replace the monitoring systems in all of their operations and held a competition offering all the major monitor makers to take part, the technical director of BR, Frank Müller-Romans, insisted on including a then unknown speaker called RL 900 that he had heard while visiting East Germany and to the consternation of their western and Asian competitors the RL 900 won outright and a number of systems were purchased by the BR. The company became independent again in 1992 and changed their name to the current one and is by now considered the premier brand in the broadcast monitor market and has won contracts with organisations notorious for favouring locally made speakers such as the NHK in Japan and the BBC in the UK.
