Thomson
Huge French electronics manufacturer that is undoubtedly best known for making audio, video and other CE products but is also heavily involved in the electronic components and defence electronics businesses with subsidiaries such as STS Thomson. Their AV products are mostly sold in Europe and the Near East under their own brand but the company also sells them in North America under the Technicolor and RCA names, in Germany and France under the Normande brand and in the UK under the Ferguson brand but have increasingly been using their own name in the above markets in an effort to consolidate branding and marketing efforts. Although French, the company actually grew out of the USA based Thomson Electric Company that is now known as General Electric, the current company is actually the result of a 1981 merger of the 2 Thomson companies that operated in France namely Thomson-Brandt and Thomson-CSF but the original Compagnie Fransaise Thomson-Houston engineering firm had split into the 2 somewhere along the line. The company was nationalised by the French government in 1982 but was privatised again between 1999 and 2003. Recently bought the accessories business of the defunct Recoton company and with it got the Dishwasher, SpikeMaster and Ambico brands and product lines along with the rights to use the Acoustic Research (AR), Jensen and Advent names for branding CE accessories. After it's nationalisation the company embarked on an series of take-overs to expand and consolidate their manufacturing capabilities, in the mid 80's it acquired the German Isophon factory primarily to acquire it's OEM loudspeaker business and does indeed own the trademark and designs but it no longer sells drivers under this name, although it does manufacture some of the old Isophon drivers, Thomson moved most of the manufacture of those drivers to Tunisia in order to get a cheaper manufacturing base while still being close to it's European markets. In a similar timeframe it acquired the Telefunken consumer division and DUAL (1982), this was as much to get hold of the trademarks as anything else since the company had had problems in the USA because of their origin they did not actually own the Thomson trademark in the USA, hence the company used the Dual trademark for marketing their products in North America and Telefunken in Germany for most of the 80's, however Thomson bought the consumer electronic division of it's old parent in the late 1980's and with it got the GE consumer electronics brand and the a right to use the logo (but not the General Electric brand itself, although the logos are the same) and the RCA company which GE had taken over previously, the acquisition of the RCA brand and marketing divisions meant that the company no longer had need for a seperate trademarks for the NA market and it sold Dual to Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG and Telefunken to Gradiente in 1989. Thomson has been for a number of years the worlds largest manufacturer of televisions but the seismic shift in the television market from Braun Tube based sets to a variety of flatscreen technologies in the last few years has seen the company make a number of dramatic changes, the Braun tube manufacuring sites in the USA have been closed down and the larger ones in India and Italy have been sold to Indian companies, but due to the low GDP in India this type of television is going to be the mainstay of production there for the foreseeable future, and BTW there is a large CE industry in India almost completely isolated from, and unknown to the rest of the world. Thomson merged their world-wide TV manufacturing operations with the TV manufacturing side of TCL International Holdings to form TCL - Thomson Electronics which is now the world's largest television manufacturer by far.
