Japanese manufacturer of consumer, car and professional audio and audio-visual products that trades in the west as JVC which is short for “Japan Victor Company” but uses Victor in Asia although it has been increasing the use of the JVC trademark on its home turf recently. The reasons for this disparity in brand usage are historical but the company only had the rights to the Victor name locally, when products from the company started arriving on the western market the company traded as NIVICO which is sort for Nippon Victor Co (Nippon = Japan) but started to use JVC as early as the 1960’s.
The company is especially strong in the professional and semi-pro video market and has been so for decades as it is amongst other things the inventor of the VHS video format and its derivatives and built the world’s first camcorder, but in Japan it is also well known as an audio manufacturer and is one of the companies that makes loudspeakers with wooden cones but that is a Japanese peculiarity. As with many electronic companies from the land of the rising sun, only a subset of their audio product range is actually distributed in the west.
Originally founded as “The Victor Talking Machine Company of Japan” in 1927 and was then the Asian branch of RCA, the company became independent during WWII although some technical co-operation with RCA remained until the 1980’s although that was more a matter of RCA importing technologies from Victor than the other way around. In 1953 the company was sold to Matsushita and the name changed to the current one, but JVC operated independently from the rest of the Matshusita group, in 2007 Matsushita sold 63% of the company stock to Kenwood and Japanese investment fund the Sparx Group, in 2008 the company became fully independent again and in 2011 merged with Kenwood to form JVC Kenwood but note that the management, sales and distribution are not shared between the 2 companies.
